Orchestrated Accidents

2018, museum installation for 2 dancers, 4 hours

Orchestrated Accidents is a response to an invitation by the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal to create a new performance within the frame of their retrospective exhibition of seminal québecoise artist Françoise Sullivan.

During our preparation for this project, we were impressed with Françoise Sullivan’s ability to shift from one medium to another while staying loyal to her methods and identity. Her sense of listening and openness became a motor for our endeavor.

Together with the performers, we developed a series of exercises. The goal of these exercises was to open ourselves up to external influences, forces and motivations. This work provided a pathway towards a specific state – a common ground – a place where the impulse to act came from outside of the body.

Through conversation and movement, the material of the work reveals itself without our conscious intervention. The performance is a sort of game about destiny and what we can make of it. It is a ritual through which we attempt to access that channel where things just feel right.
